Calligraphy – Beginners / Improvers
Calligraphy - Beginners / Improvers (2026/27)

Discover the Art of Writing
This practical and creative course is suitable for both beginners and those with some prior calligraphic experience.
Beginners will be introduced to the broad-edged pen and will learn the fundamentals of calligraphy through the study of traditional scripts, alongside design and layout skills. Learners with previous experience will build on existing skills and continue developing their personal script and design work.
Throughout the course, students will explore a range of calligraphic techniques in a supportive and encouraging environment. There will also be the opportunity to work towards a Certificate in Calligraphy for those who wish to do so.
Your Tutor: Liz Barrow
Liz is a Fellow of CLAS (Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society) and a CLAS Accredited Tutor. She has been teaching Adult Learning classes at a variety of venues since 2014 and enjoys sharing her passion for calligraphy with her students.
Alongside her teaching, Liz provides calligraphic services for the University of Cambridge and undertakes commissioned work, including certificates for Quakers and other marriage ceremonies.
