Counselling Training & CPD Courses
Bottisham Village College Adult Learning has been running professionally accredited counselling training since 1986.
Our intention is to offer the following courses in a classroom setting, but if it is necessary to deliver the courses online to meet local Covid-19 restrictions at the time, we have the ability to do so.

Our Counselling Programme includes a range of training for those interested in working as counsellors/ psychotherapists, from gaining basic counselling skills to advanced courses for experienced practitioners. All training programmes subscribe to the Ethical Framework for Good Practice of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). ASIIP (the Adlerian Society and Institute for Individual Psychology, UK) is an organisational member of the BACP. The courses have a high reputation and students are in demand for placements during the Diploma.

The Adlerian Approach
Adlerian Counselling derives from the work of the Viennese psychiatrist, Alfred Adler (1870-1937). Adler developed many key concepts and practices that have now been absorbed into other approaches and applications. The evolving theories and practice of humanistic, cognitive and psychodynamic approaches all move close to a position adopted by Adlerian practitioners, identifying its integrative nature. It is a depth psychology that is socially based, practical and optimistic. A great deal of importance is placed on creating a counselling relationship that is equal, co-operative, empathic and encouraging. To facilitate insight and movement, Adlerian counsellors frequently work with early recollections, dreams and metaphor and may use a variety of creative approaches such as art therapy, psychodrama and written exercises alongside the ‘talking therapy’.

Adler particularly emphasised the importance of community, and of family and teacher education, promoting a democratic approach to living with a practical focus on encouraging children. Adlerian psychology has been used in a variety of settings including parenting education, the classroom, coaching, business management as well as prisons and social work in addition to counselling/psychotherapy. Past learners from the BVC counselling programme have been involved in these areas as well as supervision.

Adler’s principles continue to be the basis of practice, research and publications throughout the world. The course is fortunate to be able to draw on experienced practitioners from the UK and beyond to enrich the learning on the courses.

Overview of Courses

The Introduction, Certificate* and Diploma* courses are quality assured by Gateway Qualifications as part of their Silver Assured Programme. The courses have been developed to be of equivalent standard to that expected at Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 respectively. The Gateway Assured programmes provide educational providers with the opportunity to gain an independent seal of approval for their own bespoke training packages, as an alternative to Ofqual regulated qualifications. Successful candidates on our ‘Certificate’ course will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance from Gateway in ‘Adlerian Counselling and Psychotherapy – Intermediate’ and for the ‘Diploma’ course’ it will be in ‘Adlerian Counselling and Psychotherapy – Advanced’.

The Certificate* and Diploma* courses run every two years. The next intake is September 2023. Application forms can be found to the right hand side of this page.

* Please note that the terms ‘Certificate’ and ‘Diploma’ in the context of our Adlerian counselling training programme are levels recognised by the Adlerian Society for accreditation. They should not be confused with the terms ‘Award, Certificate and Diploma’ which are usually linked to nationally regulated qualifications.

Continuing Professional Development

Bottisham Village College offers a range of CPD Workshops for counsellors and psychotherapists throughout the year which will be of interest to experienced practitioners wishing to meet the Continuing Professional Development requirements of bodies such as the BACP or the UKCP. Participants may apply to attend any of the workshops advertised, and will receive a CPD certificate of attendance.

Details can also be found on Adlerian Society website: These workshops are open to anyone attending in a professional capacity or to counselling students studying at an appropriate level at Centres other than Bottisham Village College. Fees are payable for the day or weekend, as appropriate. We attract internationally renowned speakers to present our workshops and feedback from participants confirms the high quality of these events.

Advanced Certificate in Counselling Studies
It is also possible to complete assessed training using our CPD Workshops as core modules. This involves tutorial sessions and a series of assignments. This modular training is valuable CPD in itself but also may be helpful for learners who wish to build up assessed training to meet the requirements of professional bodies, eg BACP accreditation. Further information can be found under Advanced Certificate in Counselling Studies.

The Advanced Certificate in Counselling Studies is accredited by the Adlerian Society (a component body of BACP).
